Drums and Percussion

SABIAN was founded in late 1981, when one of the world's great names in cymbal making, Bob 'Sabian' decided drummers deserve better cymbals. Not happy with the quality, sound and relevance of cymbals made at that time, he launched SABIAN. Located in the small eastern Canadian village of Meductic, New Brunswick, SABIAN - most notably The Vault, where cymbals are designed - has since become the global center for cymbal and sound innovation. Our ongoing program of discovery and design means today's drummers and percussionist have a larger-than-ever selection of interesting and innovative cymbals to choose from, with models ranging from vintage to modern, from highly personalized to whatever you need.

At DREAM Cymbals and Gongs Inc., we keep it simple. Our goal is to make the best sounding hand-made cymbals and gongs in the world, price them fairly and let the instruments speak for themselves. Better yet, let the instruments speak for you.

Owning a Dream cymbal is a relationship of discovery and innovation, creativity and loyalty. These are the instruments that allow you to explore what YOUR DREAMS sound like. Every one of our cymbals and gongs are hand-forged with ancient traditions of mixing fire and hammering bronze with craftsmanship to create a unique work of art, as individual and unique as your playing.

Istanbul Cymbals

The art of Turkish cymbal making dates back to the 16th century; the time of the Ottoman Empire. The very first cymbals manufactured in Turkey were actually bells, created for the use in churches. Later on, as the story goes, cymbals were produced for the Ottoman Army band. In 20th century, it had become a well-known fact that Istanbul, Turkey had evolved into the cymbal making capital of the world. Generations of master cymbalsmiths developed, refined and redefined this art in their endless search for perfection. They formulated the most musical alloy, developed and tested hand crafted methods which have been used for centuries. As the 20th century drew towards its close, the traditional Turkish method for hand crafting cymbals had all but been abandoned due to the efficiencies and mass production facility provided by machines. In 1980, the very first Istanbul Cymbals began to enter the market place and the drummers around the world took notice immediately. What they heard and what they saw was the work of our founder, Agop Tomurcuk, who had been developing his skills since the age of 9 and had worked at the original K factory in Istanbul as the foreman until the factory''s closure in 1978. He started this new venture in 1980, with his partner Mehmet Tamdeger under the name ‘Zilciler'. Shortly thereafter, the legendary name Istanbul was founded.

Alchemy is a new approach for the cymbal world.

The process used in producing these cymbals is different than Istanbul Agop cymbals. Alchemy cymbals start off with the ISTANBUL AGOP secret alloy, but are done with the addition of some different materials – metals that make the cymbals stronger and much more cutting. This creates the unique Alchemy sound.

The profile, created by hand – not with a pressing machine, is a difficult process. By giving the shape by hand, the Istanbul cymbal smiths control the profile for a full-bodied sound in a cutting and bright cymbal which they believe is hard to find anywhere else in today’s cymbal market.

The lathing opens the sound of the cymbal, the machine and the tools used for the lathing process of Alchemy cymbals make them roar! A unique double lathing process is used for Alchemy cymbals exclusively. The hand hammering techniques which is same for all Istanbul models is then applied with different hammer types to give the Alchemy cymbals their special sound and touch. The amazing appearance completes the uniqueness of Alchemy cymbals.
